Season of Goodwill (Part Two)
Dec 7th, 2007 by QuirkyVegan
For part two of this series, I’d like to share a story which will restore your faith in humanity. This is a copy of an email sent on our intranet at work.
“Bit of an unusual request this one but here goes! I am sure that many of you know “Jack” who has worked here for many years working for our cleaning contractors. Well yesterday, I was talking to him & he seemed a bit down & when I asked him if everything was alright he told me that he had his beloved car “torched” on Monday night. Apparently, the scum who did this, smashed the drivers side window, released the handbrake, pushed it across the road & then set fire to it, for no apparent reason. The first Jack knew about it was when his wife woke up & heard an alarm going off, she got up out of bed, looked out of the window & realised what had happened - can you imagine, 1.00 in the morning, sitting watching your car go up in flames, while you sit & wait for the Fire Brigade to arrive. As you can imagine, I felt really sorry for him but he was still trying to but a brave face on things & do his job tidying up the reception area so that everything looked immaculate but anyone who knows Jack would know that this is the sort of bloke he is - he will do anything for anybody, despite the personal crisis in his own life!Anyway he got me thinking that it would be great to do a little collection for him to try & cheer him up a bit & if we could raise say £30, he could take his wife (who also works here as a cleaner) out for a meal at the weekend (& pay for a taxi because he hasn’t got a car now!). I know we can’t replace his car but this little gesture might help him realise that his work colleagues are thinking about him at this time. Therefore if you would like to donate something, pls let me know & I will pop into your office as I am walking around doing the room survey or alternatively drop something into our office or Main Reception because the Reception staff have kindly agreed to accept any donations you may wish to give.
Please pass this message onto your other colleagues who may know Jack & pls don’t mention this to him because I obviously don’t want to embarrass him.
Finally, thanks for taking the time to read this & hopefully you will give generously”
Within a matter of hours, £550 was raised, which will really help this guy, as apparently the insurance company will only provide a courtesy car if the car is being repaired, not if it’s written off (as was obviously the case this time), so this will help him out while the claim is being processed. I just wanted to share this as it shows how generous people can be.
