No Trash Week

Found this on Lorigami’s blog. Our rubbish was collected this morning, so this is a great experiment to do. It’s interesting when you start to look at how much packaging certain items have, my personal bugbear being those little plastic trays that fruit and veg come in. Hard to recycle and totally pointless for the majority of fruit and veg, only soft fruit need protection, and in that case cardboard containers are far better than plastic as you can re-use them to plant seedlings in and then plant straight out and they biodegrade. You can also use those tubes from the middle of toilet rolls for this. :) For some more alternatives to throwing stuff out, see my Ten and a half alternatives to landfill post.
Instead of putting old envelopes into the recycling I’m keeping them for shopping lists. I will also compost veggie peelings and teabags.
That is my action for today.
I think the best way to avoid creating trash is looking carefully at what we buy. Everything you trash is something that you have paid good money for, either directly or indirectly in the case of packaging. That’s quite a sobering thought as the more rubbish you create, the more cash you’re throwing away.
