Competition Time
Jul 29th, 2008 by katesaltfleet

I’ve never held a competiton on my blog before, this is so exciting! In a blatant copy-cat action, I have ripped off the idea from Half-Pint Pixie to take part in the Bloggy Giveaway quarterly carnival. Well they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And since my blog has just celebrated its first anniversary, why not?
Up for grabs is Phyllis W. Curott’s Book of Shadows (in Hardback). Written as a novel, it follows her story from how, as a young lawyer, she joined a coven and entered the world of witchcraft. Mine does not have the same cover as this one that I purloined from Amazon (where customers have given it a Five Star rating), I actually think it is much better as it is silver and purple with a pentagram on it. It’s not so much a “how-to” guide to Wicca (although it does include some spells and details of rituals), but if you are interested in a personal account and a general introduction to the subject it is a fabulous read.
Book of Shadows is an inspirational, spiritual memoir that chronicles her journey from Ivy League-educated, New York City attorney to Wiccan High Priestess. By inviting readers of all faiths to share in her own personal transformation, Phyllis debunks many of the myths surrounding Wicca and reveals it for what it really is: a spiritual movement whose tenets of Goddess worship and reverence for Nature were a great deal more accessible and familiar than she’d ever expected.
So what do you have to do to win this fantastic book?
Simple, just add a comment using the form below, and I’d like to know what is your interest level in the subject (skeptic, dabbler, practitioner etc.) If you don’t like the subject matter and think that I am a satanist or whatever then please blog off and find another giveaway that is more to your taste. Offensive comments will be deleted.
Who can enter?
Anyone with a postal address! Wherever you are I will ship to you. You don’t even have to be a blogger (but be sure to leave a valid email address so I can get in touch with you if you’re the winner).
The competition deadline is 12 midnight UTC on August 1st, so get commenting! I will choose the winner using Random Number Selection.

I’m interested. I’ve read a bit about Wiccan, but don’t know a lot. Thanks for the entry.
Wicca and most pagan things have always been interesting to me. I like the fact that so much of it deals with nature, as I am a pretty natural-type person.
Sounds very interesting too, and I love to read!
I have been off and on dabbling since I was a young teen. I am from a family of cool people who like to learn all things,I would love to have this book!
Wicca has always fascinated me, though I don’t really ascribe to any particular religion I like it’s core beliefs and enjoy reading about it so this book would be right at home in my collection =)
Looks like a good read Kate, glad I inspired you. Wicca-wise I guess I’ll cryptically say that I know more about it than some people and less about it than others….
I’m a skeptic, but still think its a fantastic subject
I’d love to win!! I love the mysticism about magic and wiccan. Thanks for hosting such a cool giveaway!!!
I’m not sure what my interest level is. I’m not a skeptic, but I’m not a dabbler, either. I’m just interested in learning more. My brother’s girlfriend is Wiccan, but I haven’t really been able to get to know her well since they live in another state. I’m not religious at all, but I do enjoy reading about other people’s beliefs and getting a peek at how the world looks through their eyes. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Great giveaway! I hope i’m the lucky winner
I’ve always been interested in EVERYTHING and I’d love to learn more about wicca.
I am very interested in the subject. Ever since learning about how Pagan ceremonies and holy days were co-opted by Christianity I’ve been intrigued and wanted to know more! This book would find a good home with me!
[...] my blog and enter the competition I thought you guys might be interested in my little blog competition to win "A Book of Shadows" by Phyllis W. Curott. Here’s the blurb from Barnes and Noble: [...]
I am also interested. Count me in, please.
I am a pagan and would love to read this book.I find it interesting to learn about other peoples journies.
Cool book giveaway. I’m Pagan and haven’t read this book yet. Sounds like a good read.
I am a skeptic (atheist), but I love studying religions and human spirituality.
I don’t really know anything about wiccanism but I’d be interested in learning something.
I’m just curious about it I guess. My sister is a Wiccan and I have a few friends that are but they’re very shy about discussing it because they’ve tended to get negative responses from others in the past. I’d like to know more about it so I can relate more to them, and maybe expand my horizons a bit.
I would love this book. We are a pagan household and we follow many traditions. My roommate and I are practicing shamans, my son follows Thor and my other children follow different paths as well. This would be a wonderful gift for the family, and then to donate to a pagan coffee house in the area!
Great giveaway, wonderful to see a fellow pagan around!
Warm Blessings
Oh, I am pretty much a sceptic, but I would love to read about. I am always open to new ideas.
I’ve always been interested in Wicca, I have a few books & would love to read this one. If I believed in a god, this would be my religion of choice, love the philosophy behind it (nature, etc).
I have friends who are Wiccan. I wouldn’t say I’m a dabbler, but I do find some of the things they do very interesting.
Sounds interesting, and I’d love to learn more about Wicca itself as well as the author’s journey.
Sounds interesting. I’m a skeptic, but my husband is following a Shamanic path, so I support and am interested in different beliefs.
I am very interested in Wicca. I like reading about it. I not so sure about spells and curses..they may be like voodoo and work because of the power of suggestion (but anything is possible)
Ok I love to learn and read about new things and this is it. I would love to find out more. Thank you!
hmm…i’ve never heard of this book but it sounds very interesting!
i am a wiccan in a christian houshold and i dont really get many wiccan based books. i supose if i won it would be hard to mail b/c i would have to monitor the mailbox ALL THE TIME but thats ok. It would be really cool to have a book like this b/c i love to read! so if the goddess wishes it to be, then So Mote It Be!
I’ve been practicing for years and would absolutely love this book! Bright blessings for having this give away!
I think it would be interesting to read! I used to have a lot of interest in various occult subject back in high school and college–much more than the average teenager, I think–but life got in the way of much of my learning. I still think it’s a fascinating subject, just not something I have been able to invest much in lately.
Thank you for the generous giveaway!
I am always intrigued by the goddess.
You satanist!
Just kidding
I’d say I’m a dabbler with expert traits wanting to be a practitioner. I’m also a true skeptic: I doubt skepticism.
I have been giving serious thoughts to Wicca, I would love to learn more about it. I think it is something I could really get into as Christianity is so not for me.
I found you through the bloggy giveaways and just wanted to say I’m so glad that you are offering this book! I’ve seen way too many blogs in the other extreme this week and am happy to see someone spreading a good message of living with the Earth and Goddess energy. Yay!
You don’t have to enter me into the contest, I have plenty of my own books and live a very spiritually Earth-based life. I just wanted to say how happy I am that you are offering this!
My interest level is strictly curiosity. I love learning new things!
That sounds like a fascinating read. I love books that are based on personal accounts, like memiors.
Perfect for Lammas! I’m a dabbler, by the way!
I don’t know enough about it to be a skeptic. I would like to read a book like this so I can make an informed decision.
Thanks!

I’m interested, but don’t have any experience. Nice to see a different type of giveaway here. Thanks for the giveaway!
I was once a wiccan, but have since converted to Heathenism since I feel drawn exclusively to the Gods of the north. I believe strongly in the power of the mind and everyone’s own psychic ability, but i am skeptical enough to consider most “magic spells” to be pretty ludicrous.
I do say most because I think there is a significant power of belief, and I know that many people consider magic to be a form of prayer, but whenever I see a magic spell that helps to remove pimples in teenage girls, I don’t think much of that.
HI everyone,
Thanks for all your entries. The winner of the competition is Memarie Lane (comment #17), the book will be winging its way this week.
